Born in 1963 in the Netherlands, sculptor and artist Joep Van Lieshout was accepted to the Rotterdam Academy of the Arts at the age of 16.

Since the early eighties, he has produced objects in mainly bright colored polyester, the material that would become his trademark in subsequent years. In 1995, he founded Atelier Van Lieshout, undermining the myth of the individual artistic genius.
